I would like to welcome you to the band program at Millennium Middle School! I am very excited about the start of your child’s journey into making beautiful music through performance in band. I cannot wait to get started on developing them into confident, talented musicians!
For the first two weeks of school, your child will take part in “instrument fittings” on all band instruments that are played in beginning band. All students will try out all instruments that are available to them. Staff from All County Music will assist me in these fittings. The instruments your child will try out are: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba.
After a careful analysis of your child’s instrumental rating (scale from 1-5), and a conversation with your child, their instrument for the beginning band class will be selected. This selection will be the result of three factors:
- The results of the instrumental rating will be used to determine which instrument your child will have the most success playing. Different people will have more success on certain instruments due to their physical makeup, and each child is different.
- Your child’s desire to play certain instruments.
- The instrumentation needs of the band. A band of 20 alto saxophones, 3 flutes, 1 trombone, 0 tubas, and 30 percussionists will not sound good! Only a certain number of each instrument will be available in order to have a good, balanced-sounding band that will give your child (and every other child) an outstanding musical experience.
Once your child’s instrument has been selected, you will receive a form indicating which instrument has been chosen, along with a supply list. At that time, you should either rent your child’s instrument from one of the local area music stores (address and contact information listed on the supply list), or inform me that you will be using one of the school’s instruments (SBBC rental contract and payment required). In addition, you should purchase all the items on the supply list for your child’s particular instrument.
Our plan is to have all students playing their instruments in class the Tuesday after Labor Day. This date may change due to several factors, and if it does, I will be sure to let you know.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to serving you and your child as their band director!
